When I was asked by to produce a revised edition of John Wyclif: Scriptural Logic, Real Presence, and the Parameters of Orthodoxy, I immediately agreed. It was clear to me that this new volume should be a substantial revision and expansion of the original. This has given me the opportunity not only to make needed corrections, but also to re-think and re-configure earlier material. I have been able to avail myself of secondary material that has been published over the last ten years on Wyclif specifically and late medieval theology generally. Thus I have learned from, and incorporated, articles and books that could genuinely enhance my treatment of this topic. There is also a significant amount of additional primary material: some that replaces or expands similar material in earlier sections, and some that forms the bulk of an additional chapter. Hence even as this present volume is not an entirely different book, readers will nevertheless find much that is new or is at least presented in greater depth and clarity. Without rehearsing every change or addition, a few can be highlighted. I have been able to amend the chronology of Wyclifs life and career including the date of his Oxford censure based upon studies that have appeared since the first edition. I have now noted Wyclifs reliance upon Rupert of Deutzs De divinis officiis, and also have some more to say about his possible connection to Spiritual Franciscanism. With respect to some more substantial changes that one will find, Chapter One on Late Medieval Academic Life includes new material on theology as a science, questions of academic freedom, conscience, and correction. The sections on Nicholas of Lyra and Richard FitzRalph in Chapter Three, which treats The Medieval Reading of Scripture, have been greatly expanded. In Chapter Five there is now a much more extensive treatment of the Eucharist in medieval canon law, and the section on William of Ockhams eucharistic theology has been extensively re-worked. There is also new material from Bruno the Carthusian. And the Popular Piety section devotes some space to the responses of Jan Hus and Nicholas of Cusa to the miraculous hosts of Wilsnack. A brand new chapter entitled Wycliffites and Their Respondents has been added as Chapter Seven, which examines Wyclifs eucharistic legacy. This begins with previous material on Thomas Winterton, but also includes a thoroughly revised and expanded section on Thomas Netter. There is now a completely new section on William Woodford s response to Wyclifs eucharistic theology, in addition to a treatment of the Prague master Jakoubek of Stribro. English Wycliffite material has been added that includes the anonymous De oblacione iugis sacrificii; the trials of William Swynderby and Walter Brut; William Thorpes encounter with Archbishop Arundel; and Repyndon, Hereford, and Aston before Archbishop Courtenay.
